Als klassiek geschoold pianist ondervraagt Frederik Croene [°1973, België] consequent de geijkte paden van de pianotraditie. Dat resulteert in concerten met een ongewone programmatie waarin deze traditie zich moet verantwoorden ten opzichte van de hedendaagse muziek en niet omgekeerd.
Hij speelt dan ook niet louter partituurmuziek maar engageert zich ook voor ongewone projecten waarin de scheidslijn tussen componist en uitvoerder vervaagt.
Hij kreeg zijn eerste muzieklessen van organist-pianist Marcel Swolffs te Beernem. Na een periode als autodidact schreef hij zich in aan het Lemmensinstituut bij Alan Weiss. Door een groeiende belangstelling voor hedendaagse muziek en nieuwe uitvoeringspraktijken, verhuisde Frederik Croene naar Gent en volgde er pianolessen bij Claude Coppens. Nadien trok hij naar Brussel, waar hij in 1999 het meesterdiploma behaalde bij zijn laatste mentor Boyan Vodenitcharov.
Ondertussen volgde hij meestercursussen bij o.a. Jos Van Immerseel, Hans Leygraf, György Kurtag en Alexei Lubimov.
Met traditionele pianorecitals trad hij op in Estland, Slovakije, Rusland, Hongarije, Duitsland, Frankrijk en Nederland. Daar bracht hij telkens ook diepgravende uitvoeringen van Belgische muziek waarvoor hij in 2005 dan ook de Pelemansprijs mocht in ontvangst nemen.
In 2002 won hij ook de Sabam-prijs op de Orfeus-wedstrijd voor de vertolking van hedendaagse pianomuziek.
Zijn debuutcd, een radicale mix van stijlen en speeltechnieken werd in 2003 uitgebracht door de Gentse concertzaal de Handelsbeurs en enthousiast door pers en publiek ontvangen.

Hij werkt regelmatig mee met het Spectra-ensemble (Steve Reich in de Singel, Les Noces van Stravinsky op de Zomer van Antwerpen), maakt deel uit van het tango-ensemble 'OrquestAtípica', gaf concerten met Tomma Wessel, Benjamin Dieltjens, Arne Deforce, Boyan Vodenitcharov, Gudrun Vercampt, Amy Norrington, Wibert Aerts, Dominica Eyckmans, Esther Venrooy, Luk Van Loo, Anne Laberge ...
In september 2005 ging het Muziektheater voor kinderen 'Action Zjoezjoe' met poppenspeler Erik Bassier in première op het OdeGand festival. De muziek van Claude Debussy's 'La Boîte à Joujoux' wordt door het Duo XXI en Frederik Croene's prepared piano omgetoverd tot een adembenemend klankexperiment...
Op 9 oktober 2005 werd een nieuwe cd gelanceerd in de Handelsbeurs in Gent met muziek voor piano en elektronica: een samenwerking tussen componiste Esther Venrooy en Frederik Croene, met de steun van radio Klara.
Op de Gentse Feesten 2006 gaat 'Pianos Palliatifs' in première, een klanktheater in produktie van het Internationaal Straattheater Festival. Concept, muziek en uitwerking zijn door performer Erik Bassier en Frederik Croene uitgedacht.
Momenteel geeft hij les aan de muziekacademies in Gentbrugge en Tweebruggen in Gent.

Frederik Croene teaches contemporary music, improvisation and piano at the academies of Gentbrugge and Tweebruggen in Gent.

Piano Solo
As a soloist, Frederik Croene will present in the coming seasons recitals in which he confronts his search for a paradoxical authenticity (translating the attainments of the Authenticity Movement to the modern piano) with recent music and twentieth-century music. The key is the question of the relevance of both the current piano repertory as the recent music with its equalizing languages. These programmes intend not to provoke, they are rather the externalization of an instinct to draw the ultimate sense out of music in all its guises. The works put to trial established recital traditions and renew them consequentially. Frederik Croene scrutinizes the typical problem of cultural coexistence, which is characteristic nowadays, during these recitals on an artistic meta-level. An excessive passion for the performed works keeps theorising at a distance (Cf. solorecitals).
